ZAPATA conducted archival research into past U.S. use of several locations in Saipan and Rota. We also conducted field surveys to determine the presence or absence of Munitions and Explosives of Concern (MEC) as well as past use of the sites by the U.S. military.

The objective of this project was to clear unexploded ordnance (UXO) from an active USMC impact area to permit the safe removal of existing targets to facilitate installation of upgraded targets that will have less impact on the surrounding environment.

ZAPATA has provided a wide variety of Munitions and Explosives of Concern (MEC) safety support to the Kaho'olawe Island Reserve Commission on the island of Kaho’olawe since 2004. The island of Kaho’olawe was used by the U.S. military for over 60 years as a maneuver, bombing and naval gunnery target. Despite a 4 year cleanup effort prior to its return to the State of Hawaii, considerable MEC hazards remain.

Working with other team partners, ZAPATA conducted a survey and removal of Munitions and Explosives of Concern (MEC), MEC scrap, and “MEC-like” items from a 1500 acre impact area formerly used by the Hawaii National Guard.
